File Management

When you take an online course with Superintendents Academy, you will need to locate folders from your computer and copy them into appropriate folders online, which is called uploading. You may also want to transfer shared files from the course website onto your own computer, which is called downloading. This tutorial explains how to perform both tasks.

The file management process in the Prometheus course management system is quite similar to file management procedures in a Windows and Macintosh operating system.

  • In Windows, you can navigate through your file directory using Windows Explorer (on the Start menu, go to Programs, then to Accessories)
  • On a Macintosh, choose the Hard Drive icon to navigate through the files and folders stored on your computer.

Uploading a file from your computer

  1. On the vertical navigation bar at the left of the screen, select Files. This will take you the File Management screen, which displays all the file folders that are available to you within the course. (See figure below.) Clicking the [+] symbol next to a folder will expand the folder and show its contents, while clicking a [-] symbol next to a folder will collapse it.

  2. Select the Post Files link at the top of the File Management window. This opens the file upload screen, which is shown below. On the file upload screen, arrow 1 points to the “Title.” Enter the name you wish to give the file within the Prometheus File Manager.

  3. Arrow 2 points to the “File.” This asks for the source from which you want to transfer your file. Clicking the Browse button opens a “Choose File” window, which lets you navigate through files on your computer. Use the pull-down menu labeled “Look in” to locate the folder housing the file you want to upload. Once you’ve selected the appropriate folder (or the appropriate drive, if the file is on a floppy disk or CD), choose the desired file and click Open. Rest assured that uploading the file will merely copy it to the destination folder without removing the file from its original location.
  4. Arrow three points to the file upload screen, use the drop-down menu to choose your upload destination (the folder where you want the file to be stored in Prometheus). If you are uploading a file that you do not want to share with classmates, your destination will be My Files. If this is a file you want to share with others in the course, post it in the appropriate course folder.
  5. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the uploading screen. You should receive a message confirming that your file has been uploaded.
